THYRSIS AND MENALCAS, A PASTORAL.
Thyrsis.
Contented thus I lead a rural life
Free from all cares and ignorant of strife.
Under the shade which chessnut trees diffuse,
'Long Hudson's banks I entertain my muse.
With my rude strains the neighbouring hills rebound,
And echoing vallys mock the rustick sound.

Thyrsis, the welcome tidings which I bring,
Will ease your cares, and cause you once more sing.

Let Hudson's waves inspire thy amourons lays,
From Delia's hands accept the generous bays.
My strains from Cloe shall recieve their fire,
Her features only can my Mnse inspire.
Thyrsis.
But say, Menalcas, do you speak the truth"
Oh thou well fated! thou too happy youth.
Does that bright maid once more adorn our field,
Which can no pleasure in her absence yeild.
Your counsel I approve whilst in his height,
Poor vanquish'd Phaebus yeilds a fainter light.
Let's each our flighting lovers charms display,
And sing and drive all nauseous cares away,
